Forest Fit
Chilly Fun
When did you last disconnect from your phone and spend time in nature? The chilly weather may seem like an excuse to stay inside, but Sharon from Forest Fit treats it as a new landscape to explore. As a local to the region with years of experience hiking through local forests, Sharon is a knowledgeable guide for this all-weather adventure. With this winter experience, you can gather with a local expert and a group of like-minded outdoor enthusiasts for a full day of fun, exercise, and connection. With a variety of hikes to choose from, you can learn survival skills, and information about the local land, and have a guided meditative experience while gathering a sense of connection to nature.
Sharon offers three experiences, which can be booked through the Forest Fit website. The “Don’t Sweat the Wild” active forest hike will help you learn more about invasive & native plant species, enjoy local foods, and get plenty of exercise. The “River Sunset Refresh” is a quick-paced evening hike with breaks for reflection on the sights and sounds of nature, which ends with a cozy view of the sunset. Finally, the “Sensory Fitness & Destress” is a slow-paced hike that allows you to listen to nature and reconnect with your body. All senses are used in this hike, which makes this adventure a great activity for couples to reflect together.
Bird Watching
Don’t miss out on birdwatching in Haldimand, with a variety of bird species to be found in the area's Carolinian Forest. Many permanent residents stay through the winter, like the great horned and Eastern screech owls, most woodpeckers, white-breasted and red-breasted nuthatches, Northern mockingbird, black-capped chickadee, Northern cardinal, and blue jays, which can be found in many different habitats. Some species visit the area, such as Canada goose, mallard, black duck, common merganser, and common goldeneye which concentrate on ice-free sections of the Grand River. Ruthven Park National Historic Site offers trails free for use by the public and operates a seasonal bird-banding station.
Lafortune Park in Caledonia is a great place to enjoy bird watching while snowshoeing or cross-country skiing when snow falls. It is adjacent to the Grand River, making it a prime location for many bird species such as the mallard and black duck. Head down towards the Lake Erie shoreline and walk through Waterfront Way Trail in Selkirk for even more diversity in species. Find out more about bird watching.
